BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Kern County Animal Services emphasizes the importance of microchips after a dog reported missing from Bakersfield for three weeks was reunited with his family after being found in Tehachapi.

KCAS said on Saturday, Animal Control Officer Sugg picked up an injured dog on top of an Alpine Forest mountain in Tehachapi. The dog was injured and appeared to have been attacked by wildlife.

In a social media post, it said the dog was microchipped and his name was Simba. His owner was notified that Simba had been found after being missing for about three weeks.

KCAS said Simba went missing from his home in Bakersfield. The post said sometime later, based on social media postings, a person picked Simba up.

The post said, “But then decided they weren't able to follow through on picking up a stray dog - And turned him loose at Lake Woolomes, 30 minutes north, near Delano. Luckily for Simba, he was picked up again by someone new. They set off in the opposite direction, over an hour south, to Tehachapi. But during a stop near Brite Lake, Simba got loose and escaped!”

KCAS said he was lost for the third time.

The post said eventually, Simba was spotted, injured, on top of an Alpine Forest mountain. He was immediately scanned for a microchip, and his family was notified.

Simba has been reunited with his family.

The post said, “Think of Simba's 3 week journey - From Bakersfield, to Delano, to Tehachapi, and back to Bakersfield.”

KCAS said Simba has been to the vet and is being treated for his injuries.

The post emphasized the importance of having pets microchipped.

“Microchips save lives and reunite pets with their owners every single day. If you've got a pet - microchip it,” said in a post.
