If you have ever seen a dog in a weight pulling contest, you will see them wearing a clip vest / harness. These types of harnesses actually promote pulling and also lack in keeping your dog secure. Here's why...
These vests / harnesses strap around the shoulders and chest of the dog and quite simply, they promote the dog to pull against that pressure and ultimately pull you on the leash. Leash pullling is an undesirable trait, something that many dog owners battle, and these types of vests / harnesses will NOT help that issue but will only worsen it.
Aside from promoting your dog to pull, we advise against these harnesses for their lack of safety. We have seen enough dogs get nervous and successfully wiggle their way out of them, getting loose and causing a very dangerous situation for themselves and their owners.
One reason for this... the clips. There are usually multiple clips on these harnesses which means multiple points of potential failure or at the least, potential for an unsecure fastening. This is the main reason that we advise against clip collars altogether. Clips are often plastic and can wear, crack or break, making it much more likely to be unsecure or fail completely. One unsecured fastening is all it takes for a dog to get loose and run away or run into the street.. Not good!
The second reason is that each clip is adjustable, which means that the adjustment can and will become looser over time. As the adjustment loosens, it creates more space where the harness should be snug, and that space will eventually be big enough for the dog to potentially get their arms free, and then their whole body out of the vest, creating that incredibly unsafe situation that every dog owner dreads. A dog escaping from a collar or harness like this on a busy street, or during a walk in any unsafe area can be horrific.
For these reasons, we beg you to stay away from these, and instead, consider using a Harness Lead like the ones pictured in the video above. We specifically use harness leads for 2 main reasons...
The first and most important is for safety. There are no clips to fasten that can potentially break or come undone. This lead is one piece and when fastened properly, is virually impossible for the dog to escape from!
Aside from being extremely safe and secure, the harness lead when tugged, gives a gentle squeeze around the dogs belly, giving a sort of correction that will gain their attention and is way more effective when giving your dog direction, as compared to a clip harness that will simply pull against their chest, prompting them to pull against you, as we stated above.
Another good reason we use them are for their ability to not only be used as a secure harness lead, but also as a slip lead, which also has proper rubber stoppers to ensure they are fastened securely and keep your dog safe as well, making it a dual purpose tool.
Harness leads are an extremely functional, and more importantly, a much safer tool to use than a clip vest or harness. Consider a harness lead for your dog as a more effective walking tool to keep them safer and more comfortable.
