Many dog owners love to share something that they have been eating their beloved pet. The last bite of a sandwich, or leftover scraps seems like a kind gesture to share, however, we must be aware of the fact that dogs have a different metabolism than humans, and because of that, some foods or ingredients can be toxic and potentially harmful, even fatal for dogs to consume!

Check this list of poisonous foods /drinks that you MUST be aware of if you own a dog:

1. Avocado - Contains a toxin called persin that cn cause diarrhea and vomiting in dogs and can potentially be deadly. Also, it too high in fat for dogs and could put them at risk for pancreatitis.

2. Grapes and raisins - Even a small amount of grapes or raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs!

3. Some Peanut Butters, sugar free candy / gum, breath mints, some baked goods - Many of these products contain xylitol, which is a low calorie sugar replacement. Because so many companies are on the sugar free frenzy, be aware of the ingredients as xylitol can cause severe illness in dogs, cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure and potentially be fatal.

4. Chocolate - Can cause potentially deadly heart and central nervous system problems in dogs because it contains theobromine and caffeine. Dark chocolate has a higher concentration of theobromine and is therefore much more toxic!

5. Mushrooms - Although only a few mushroom species are known to be poisonous to dogs, those that are, can be deadly. Since it is very hard to tell them apart, dogs should never be fed mushrooms.

6. Onions, garlic and chives - These contain a compound that damages dogs red blood cells causing anemia.

7. Macadamia nuts - It only takes a few of these to poison a dog, with symptoms like weakness, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia.

8. Cherries - The stems, leaves and pits of cherries contain cyanide, which is highly toxic and can cause rapid respiration due the body's stress response and potential death if too much is ingested.

9. Tomatoes - The green part of the tomato plant contains a substance called solanine which is toxic to dogs. Although fully ripened tomatoes are not toxic, staying away from them altogether is just a safer bet.

10. Caffeine - Even a small amount of caffeine can be toxic to dogs. Which is why chocolate, coffee, tea or any sports or energy drinks should be kept away from your dogs. Seizures, tremors, vomiting and diarrhea are some of the effects.
