Did you know that you can use 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting in your dog in the event that your dog swallows something toxic or harmful? (Always check with a licensed vet before attempting to induce vomiting in your dog)
Accidents happen, and sometimes our dogs get into garbage or find things that they can ingest that are poisonous or potentially harmful to them. Foods like:
Chocolate (the darker, the more harmful to dogs if ingested)
Grapes / Raisins
Cherries
Onions
Tomatoes
Garlic
Sugar free candy / gum containing Xylitol (Which can also be found in some Peanut butters and other sweetened products so beware!)
If something toxic was swallowed within two hours, 3% Hydrogen Peroxide can be syringed into the dogs mouth and swallowed to induce vomiting and hopefully prevent most of the harmful food to come out before being digested. The recommended dosage is 1 teaspoon per 5lb of body weight of the dog. Over 45lbs, the maximum dose regardless of the dogs weight is 3 tablespoons, as any more than that can be harmful to any dogs stomach. If your dog does not vomit in about 15 minutes, a second dose can be administered, however now more than 2 doses in total!
Please know that you should never induce vomiting if you think your dog swallowed something that is not edible like toys, batteries, sharp objects etc. as they can severely damage your dog's insides and do more harm if vomiting is induced. In these cases please take your dog to a vet or emergency hospital as soon as possible. Do not attempt to induce vomiting in a dog that is already vomiting, or that is lethargic or comatose, having seizures or that is having trouble breathing. Which is also something to be aware of when dealing with a brachycephalic breed like pugs, English Bulldogs or French Bulldogs (Short muzzle dogs). Always contact a vet before attempting to induce vomiting in any dog to be safe as possible.
