Washing food and water bowls is an important aspect of daily routine when it comes to our dogs health and well being. We recommend bowls that are stainless steel as they are non-pourous and therefore less likely to retain bacteria and odor, and also makes them much easier to keep clean.
Water bowls should be rinsed every day! Biofilm is the slimy, foamy substance that will build around the dog's water bowl if not cleaned. This biofilm is a bacteria that can harbor harmful organisms like E. coli, listeria and legionella and when not cleaned for too long, can contaminate the bowl and the water that our pups drink. Contamination of this kind has been linked to UTI's (Urinary Tract Infections), Bladder infections and even ear infections and more..
Washing the water bowl with hot water and a paper towel before each refill can help break up the bacteria, and a deep clean can be done with hot water and soap at least once a week and will help prevent this biofilm from building upand becoming potentially harmful.
Food Bowls should be washed thoroughly after each feeding with hot water and soap. Vinegar can be used once a week as well to further disinfect the food bowls to ensure no harmful bacteria is lingering. We can never be too safe when it comes to our pups health, and keeping their daily feeding and water bowls sanitized is something that should not be overlooked!
